Mokaksin Centre for Blackfoot Research and Resilience

Red Crow Community College Launches Groundbreaking Blackfoot-Led Research Centre to Advance Innovation, Culture and Sustainability.

Stand Off, Alberta — Red Crow Community College (RCCC) is proud to announce the launch of the Mokakssin Centre for Blackfoot Research and Resilience, a transformative research initiative designed to integrate Blackfoot traditions with modern scientific innovation. This research centre, guided by the priorities of the Kainai (Blood Tribe) community, aims to preserve cultural heritage, strengthen community self-sufficiency, promote environmental sustainability, and support economic and social development for the Blackfoot people. The Mokakssin Centre will foster community-driven solutions for future generations.

To develop the Mokakssin Centre’s applied research capacity, RCCC has recently been awarded a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Mobilize Grant. Mobilize grants provide long term (5 years) and flexible funding to help post-secondaries develop their research programs, engage in research projects, train students in research, and strengthen their ties with community, industry, and other partners in the innovation ecosystem.

Community-Led Vision and Innovation

The Mokakssin Centre is rooted in Blackfoot values, blending Elder knowledge, oral histories, and respect for the land with contemporary scientific approaches. RCCC is currently undertaking a needs assessment to help identify community-relevant research focus areas. This will ensure that Elders, students, employees, industry, service providers, and local leaders have a voice in shaping the Mokakssin Centre’s priorities. RCCC’s strategy also supports ongoing dialogue and community input though the establishment of a Community Research Advisory Circle and close collaboration with community stakeholders.

Safeguarding Blackfoot Knowledge

RCCC is committed to protecting traditional knowledge and intellectual property through rigorous ethical protocols, Band Council Resolutions, and formal agreements. All research activities will be guided by Elders and knowledge keepers, ensuring cultural integrity and community trust. External collaborations will be pursued strictly on Kainai terms, ensuring cultural relevance and community leadership.

A Model for Indigenous-Led Research

The Mokakssin Centre exemplifies a co-created, relational Blackfoot approach, with Elders and community members actively involved at every stage. Research outcomes will be mobilized back into the community and educational curricula, supporting ongoing innovation, capacity building, and cultural reflection.
