Program Details

The Niitsitapi Literacy and Upgrading Program are designed to help learners achieve their personal, cultural, and academic goals while honouring traditional teachings rooted in Kainaysinni. By embedding Blackfoot culture and knowledge into every classroom experience, we strengthen Niitsitapi identity and create a learning environment that is both meaningful and transformative.

Adult learners in the Literacy Program earn Alberta Education course credits and develop the proficiency needed to advance their educational and employment opportunities. Graduates may continue into the Niitsitapi Upgrading Program, where they can:

· Complete requirements for the Alberta High School Diploma
·
Take courses that qualify for post-secondary admission as mature students

Both programs provide comprehensive support and resources, ensuring learners can confidently progress toward their goals. Our approach prepares students culturally and academically to embrace new opportunities and transform their lives.

· Niitsitapi Culture And Knowledge Curriculum
·
All Courses Accredited By Alberta Education
·
Credits Applied to Students’ Alberta High School Transcripts
· Post-Secondary Preparation And Guidance

Quarter System Scheduling

Our program is scheduled according to the Quarter System. This change is designed to enhance your learning experience, provide more focused instruction, and better support your academic success.

The quarter system divides the academic year into four equal terms. Instead of juggling multiple subjects all year, a student will take one to two courses per quarter.

Each quarter typically lasts about 2.5 months.

Quarter 1: September to November
Quarter 2:
November to January
Quarter 3:
January to April
Quarter 4:
April to June

How Does This Benefit You?

  • Focused Learning: With fewer subjects at a time, you can dive deeper into each course and reduce daily workload stress
  • Improved Grades: Concentrated study time often leads to better performance and retention.
  • Faster Progress: You will complete courses more quickly, which will allow you to move forward into post-secondary education sooner.
  • Flexibility: The system allows for more personalized scheduling and pacing.
  • Post-Secondary Education: Students are more prepared for post-secondary education.

Attendance Matters More Than Ever

Because each quarter is shorter, every day counts! Missing even a few days can mean falling behind significantly. Here’s why attendance is crucial:

1. Accelerated Pace: Lessons move quickly, and catching up is harder.

2. Participation: Many courses rely on in-class activities and discussions.

3. Assessment: Quizzes, assignments, and exams come up faster than in a semester system.

4. Duration: 1-2 Academic Years

5. Credential: High School Diploma and/or Mature Student Status for Post Secondary Education

6. Location: Funding Available at Both the Main and Satellite Campuses

7. Start Dates: Depends on the Quarter in which a Student Applies

8. Application Deadline: Every Year

Quarter 1 – June 15
Quarter 2
– October 15
Quarter 3
– December 15
Quarter 4
